In what appears to be the best news for the educational year of 2022 for both parents and students alike in Lagos, the Government of Lagos State has announced a 65 percent cut in tuition fees for the state-owned universities.
This disclosure was made by the governor’s special adviser on education, Tokunbo Wahab. He said the action was geared towards providing support for state-owned varsities and make them some of the best in Nigeria.
The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) will benefit from the gesture.
The universities’ managements had proposed N195,000 for tuition before the 65% reduction announced by Government.
In reaction, the president of students’ union government (SUG) in Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Okeychukwu David, said he is delighted by the news.
According to a report from the statistista Research Department Nigeria counts 170 universities. Of these, 79 are private, 43 are federal, and 48 are state universities.
“The most expensive state university for undergraduate programs in Nigeria is the Edo University. In 2019, the average annual tuition fee for bachelor programs at this state institute was 500 thousand Naira, around 1.2 thousand U.S. dollars. The First Technical University followed with 400 thousand Naira, some 972 U.S. dollars. Only 30 state universities had tuition fees, according to the source.”
This is one case out of many. The hike in tuition fees in Nigerian public and private institutions has reached its peak for many parents and a cut in fees would be a relief.
