Nigeria, through the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, has launched the first transnational education programmes leading to the issuance of international degrees.

The programmes leading to the degrees, an MSc in artificial intelligence and data technologies and an MA in digital media and communications, will commence in September 2027.

The Africanscholar learnt that the launch followed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier signed by both universities on January 29, 2026.

The degrees were developed in collaboration with the federal ministry of education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) through a transnational education unit based in Lagos.

Speaking during the launch on Friday, the minister of education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the partnership as a landmark for the sector, noting that it aligns with the federal government’s transnational education (TNE) policy and the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).

“This is a first for Nigeria and the beginning of many more to come. We now have transnational education in action, with one of the world’s leading universities partnering with one of Nigeria’s best universities,” Alausa said.

He added that the initiative would expand access to international-standard programmes at home and equip students with skills for the digital economy.

The minister further noted that the programmes were deliberately selected to address emerging skill requirements, particularly in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital communication.

According to him, “the MSc in artificial intelligence and data technologies will provide training in areas including machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, large language models, data management and AI ethics.

“The MA in digital media and communications will equip students with expertise in digital cultures, research methods, content creation, broadcasting and contemporary media practices, supporting career opportunities in journalism and the wider communications industry.”

Also speaking, the vice-chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, said the partnership would strengthen internationalisation, modernise curricula and support research in emerging fields.

On his part, the provost of the University of Birmingham, Prof. Nick Vaughan-Williams, said the institution was proud to launch the programmes with UNILAG, noting that the collaboration would support Nigeria’s higher education and talent development needs.

He emphasised that universities have a vital role in preparing graduates for rapidly changing global economies through skills development, entrepreneurship and expanded employment opportunities.
