Reasons have emerged about why the United States (US) government supports press freedom in Nigeria.
According to an official document from the US Mission in Nigeria dated October 1st, a copy of which was seen by The Africanscholar, a free press is a critical pillar of democracy.
In November 2022, the US Mission in Nigeria issued a grant of$226,889 to the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) for the training of editors and other senior journalists on press freedom and strengthening of democracy across the nation’s six geopolitical zones.
“A strong democracy includes a free press – one that keeps the public informed, enables a diversity of voices, and holds leaders accountable,” said the US Mission in a post on Sunday.
The US government further affirmed that it “recognizes the essential role of the media in Nigeria today.”
