The federal ministry of water resources will begin a workshop to validate the policy document for gender mainstreaming in water sector management beginning from May 25 to 26 in Abuja.

The workshop aims to improve on existing polices, frameworks and guidelines in gender mainstreaming as it affects the water sector. It is expected that the policy document would ensure a gender mainstreaming implementation strategy and result in a framework that would set out the specific roles, responsibilities, strategies, activities and indicators for effective implementation and monitoring of the policy across the ministry and it’s agencies.

Mainstreaming gender in the development and management of water resources is part of the process to guide the long-term vision on water, life and environment in the 21st Century, as launched by the World Water Council.

The 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women endorsed gender mainstreaming as a critical and strategic approach for achieving gender equality commitments.

Participants for the workshop were drawn from various departments in the ministry, its agencies, NGOs and the developmental partners.
