Prof. Anton Zeilinger of the University of Vienna has won the Nobel Prize in Physics for the year 2022.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking experiments with entangled photons on Tuesday, 4 October.
Zeilinger was appointed professor of experimental physics at the University of Vienna in 1999 and has been emeritus professor at the university since 2013.
“We congratulate Anton Zeilinger warmly on this great success. This most prestigious academic award is the best proof that we are conducting cutting-edge research at an international level. This also shows in the more than 25 awards and excellence programmes in the discipline of physics in the past years,” said Sebastian Schütze, who is the rector of the University of Vienna, in a first reaction to Zeilinger’s announcement as winner of the Nobel Prize.
Zeilinger’s experiments with entangled photons provide new insights into the foundations of quantum physics and prepare the ground for new technologies based on quantum information.
Also in a congratulatory message, Robin Golser, who is the dean of the faculty of physics at the University of Vienna, said “the faculty of physics is absolutely delighted about this highly deserved award for Anton Zeilinger, who has substantially shaped research and the promotion of early stage researchers at our faculty since 1999 – as a top researcher, academic mentor and also as dean of our faculty. The fact that there is a thriving landscape for quantum research in Austria is a great achievement that can also be credited to Anton Zeilinger. With his scientific curiosity and enthusiasm, he is an inspiration for all faculty members.”
