The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday in Abuja reaffirmed his commitment towards ending open defecation in Nigeria by signing the pledge card as a way of publicly expressing his intentions.
Water resources minister, Suleiman Adamu, witnessed the signing of the document, among other people present at the occassion.
Shortly after President Buhari signed the pledge card, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo also followed him in signing the pledge card as a sign of the Federal Government’s support to the federal ministry of water resources on its ongoing campaign to make open defecation in Nigeria a thing of the past.
The pledge card is a commitment booklet that was prepared during the flag-off of the campaign and is meant to be signed by chief executives of both the federal and state governments. Its meaning is to signify their readiness to give political and financial support toward meeting the target of ending open defecation in Nigeria by 2025.
Going forward, state governors are expected to follow suit in signing the pledge card and committing to end open defecation in their respective states by the target date.
